Unpicked: Fashion & Freedom of association

This report highlights a major step backwards by global fashion brands and their suppliers in ensuring the fundamental and facilitating rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The research draws on interviews with 24 trade union leaders and surveys of 124 union activists and labour advocates conducted by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre (the Resource Centre). It details the myriad ways in which freedom of association and collective bargaining remain under attack in five major garment producing countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Union leaders continue to face discrimination, threats, violence, false charges and arrests, with factories persistently using COVID-19 as a pretext for these attacks and other attempts to suppress organising efforts and suspend collective bargaining agreements.
