Nirgendwo wird das Scheitern des linearen Geschäftsmodells der Fast Fashion-Industrie deutlicher als in den Ländern, in denen viele dieser billigen Kleidungsstücke nach ihrem kurzen Leben landen: Sie werden auf offenen Feuern verbrannt oder landen auf riesigen Müllhalden, entlang von Flüssen, von wo aus sie ins Meer gespült werden, mit schwerwiegenden Folgen für Mensch und Umwelt. In diesem Briefing wird aufgezeigt, welche Rolle importierte Altkleider, sogenannte „Mitumba“, in Ostafrika spielen, und wie viele davon von so schlechter Qualität sind, dass sie direkt auf der Müllhalde landen.

Persistent problems have been documented in the effectiveness of social auditing and ethical certification schemes when it comes to preventing, detecting and addressing forced labour. In recent years the social compliance industry has awoken to these limitations and there is growing discussion of the need to improve forced labour detection and remediation systems. To date, reform efforts have centred around improving ethical certification standards and audit methodologies on paper, but there is little evidence that incremental improvements are leading to meaningful change on the ground.

This report highlights the key findings of a Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre (Modern Slavery PEC) research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The project was funded through an open call for proposals to examine the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on modern slavery. The project explored the impact of the pandemic on the management of modern slavery risk in Indian fashion supply chains.

Through collaboration with partners and allies inside and outside Myanmar, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is monitoring the significant increase in labour and human rights abuses of garment workers across the country since the military takeover. This cooperation has enabled the creation of our tracker of allegations of garment worker abuse. This tracker captures over 100 cases of alleged labour and human rights abuses perpetrated against at least 60,800 garment workers, revealing widespread and systemic abuse of garment workers in international brands’ supply chains.
